Read “The Long Roll” first, then “Cease Fire”.
Love this story even though the battle descriptions got to be very wordy. That was the style and it does give a real description of the areas and what the war did to them and the people.
I love reading about the civil war and this was and excellent story, but the ending was not what I expected. I did like the way it skipped around battle locations and it did give a very good account of the conditions of the armies
A nice little love story with a little about the civil war and what camp life was like in the civil war
Well researched and written from a "Southern viewpoint". Emphasizes and romanticizes the Confederate " Lost cause" concept glossing over slavery.
Walk through the Civil War, the War Between The States, the war against secession, call it what you will. See it through the eyes of those who fought, were injured, were killed, we're captured. Those who lost fathers, husbands, sons, brothers, uncles, cousins. Those whose farms, lands, homes, barns, and grounds were burned, lost, pillaged.
Leave it with a sad heart, realizing that all were responding to an inner drive that didn't not allow defeat nor hardship to give in to the lack of common sense by which the events were conducted.
Thank you Mary for a view of the price paid to avoid breaking our nation apart, avoiding the far greater impact secessionist victory would have delivered, the self-centered perspective under which it was carried out . If only ALL of us would grasp the magnitude of the battles; the losses of both "winner" and "loser"; the fact that "war is hell"; would set our course for "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" built upon a foundation of "all are created equal". Thank you Mary!
This is an awesome read. I love history, especially civil war era. I do not like romance books or fiction. This is a great book and actually I am reading it again.
