Evil is deeply entrenched in society during the First Crusade, as two worlds collide over faith and powerful figures manipulate religion and men to further their own agendas. In the middle, three oridinary people are in danger of being overwhelmed by war and political expedience – but they do not fight alone…
The novel's title, East of Ashes, is a play on words from two scriptures in the Bible that speaks of God removing our sins "as far as the east is from the west" and bringing forth "a crown of beauty instead of ashes".
Part romance, part historical epic (much like Francine Rivers' bestselling The Mark of the Lion trilogy), East of Ashes is a Christian fiction novel that follows the journey of Lamech – a young knight with blood on his hands who seeks redemption in the love of a beautiful woman, but instead finds that his path leads him right into the midst of the brutality of the First Crusade.
As he fights in the Crusader army at the siege of Antioch in the year 1098 A.D., Lamech witnesses horrific deeds that echoes with his own guilt, but begins to discover something so radiant that it threatens to consume him.

I downloaded “East of Ashes” because I liked the title. Except for a couple extraneous passages, the story's told pretty well. I'd never thought much about the Crusades beyond what I was taught in school, so it was an interesting backdrop. I liked how Lamech’s backstory is revealed gradually and how it shows how seriously he took his religion. Though with him being a hero in the Crusades, I anticipated a different ending. I didn't hate how the author ended it. I just felt I’d been set up to expect something else.Product details

East of Ashes edition by Gideon Nieuwoudt Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Wonderful reading and unique writing in this book. Loved every chapter and the main characters were very interesting and totally unexpected. Many highs and lows that kept you reading from chapter to chapter never wanting to put it down! Cudos to the author!!!
Good read )
The forgiveness of God is a wonderful thing. To lay down ones life for another is love at its greatest.
U feel the writing was lacking in development of charachters. While I'm far from a literary critique U only know how. I feel.
Historical novel about 2 men in love with the same woman and the spiritual and emotional struggles they go through. Recommended reading.
I got this book as a free weekly offering. It looked like a good templar knights story, though I wasn't expecting much in the form of literary greatness. I was so wrong! A story of unrequited love and a romance with one girl in the middle, the story twists and turns until tragedy ensues, and that's where God steps in. The story is wonderful and the writing is excellent with a perfect message of how God cares for us, each and every one. I highly recommend this book, whether it's free or purchased.
The story plot was enough to keep my interest, but it seemed a little stilted. Not sure that's even the right word. But there just wasn't quite a good flow to the writing. Also, the author seemed to be attempting to use a lot of descriptive "author-type" words, but they often seemed stuck in or added on to a sentence for the sake of using the word and not really serving the purpose of giving an accurate word picture. There were rather awkward attempts to include a gospel message, and at the same time include some gore.
